The Shadow of Doubt and the Absurdity of Certainty

Most believers doubt they could be wrong. Doubt is not the issue. Becoming cynical or indifferent is. It’s OK to doubt. The video lecture, located here, was originally given at Calvary Church in Orland Park on Feb 9th.

Can a man believe and doubt at the same time? Most of our doubts can raise their heads for a variety of reasons and most of them are not intellectual. We might doubt that God is good or that the Bible is reliable, but many of our doubts come from deep pain or sorrow or disappointment as a result of betrayal or other such stabs in the heart – a painful divorce, the death of a child, the loss of a job.

In this short lecture on doubt, I give an exegesis of the Biblical passage John 20: 24-31. Below is the outline. Your thoughts, critical questions or insights are most welcome!

1. YOU ARE NOT ALONE
2. DOUBT CAN LEAD TO GENUINE FAITH
3. ABSOLUTE CERTAINTY IS ABSURD
4. BELIEVE, FIRST THAT YOU MAY UNDERSTAND
